Happy Families

On his graduation day, John looks back over his teenage years, recalling all the embarrassments, tensions, joys and sorrows of family life. As he grows older and becomes better educated, he feels less and less comfortable with his working class family who cannot understand his growing intellect and his theatrical aspirations; at the end he is left, alone and uncertain, to face the future … Full of warmth, understanding and humour, Happy Families paints an affectionate and appealing portrait of an ordinary family struggling with change, bereavement and the generation gap.

Originally commissioned by the Little Theatre Guild, this memory play, set in the sixties & seventies, was first performed in October 1991 simultaneously across the country. The playwright John Godber has been listed as the third most performed in the country, after Shakespeare and Ayckbourn, and presents his wry look at the institution that is, for some, all too familiar.
